In all honesty, the first season functions no differently than a run of the mill slice of life. This is where we really see Tomoya progress as a character. 'Clannad: After Story' is where the meat of this anime tale is. Sprinkle in some fantasy plot line, and then we have our story. Many of the plot threads that fuel the story, are done so with the purpose of showing progress in TomoyaвЂ™s life. Somehow, there is a strange connection between Tomoya and Nagisa, but they canвЂ™t put their finger on it.Д¬lannad is a slice of life anime. Together, they reform their school drama club, and make friends along the way. This causes Nagisa to become separated from society. Her sickness comes around the same time every year, when the town is cold. This is why as the town changes, NagisaвЂ™s life changes as well. The town granted his wish, but in return, the town became intertwined with Nagisa. She was on the verge of dying when her dad brought her to an open field, and prayed for a miracle to happen. This town gives people the ability to make wishes, and see those wishes come true. They typically appear at the end of an arc when a problem is solved. Orbs of light appear when someone exudes hope and happiness. The town Clannad takes place in has folklore. If youвЂ™ve read up until this point and still donвЂ™t understand the ending of Clannad, donвЂ™t worry, I got you. This is why Tomoya sees orbs throughout the town on the night Ushio was born. More accurately, THE TOWN grants TomoyaвЂ™s wish. He now knows what he wants and Ushio grants this. The moment they share (the hugging) is meant to be a realization of TomoyaвЂ™s wish. This scene is meant to be an illustration of the вЂњideaвЂќ that Tomoya knows his heartвЂ™s desire. Nagisa-seemingly aware of everything that has happened-is glad that he chose to be with her. Will he wish to never meet and speak with Nagisa on that day? Or will he choose to accept Nagisa regardless of the hurt that may await him in the future?ДЄt first, he lets Nagisa pass him by, but then he comes to his senses, and he calls out to her. ItвЂ™s believed that this scene does not actually take place in a timeline, rather it is a decision Tomoya must make. Tomoya is faced with the same situation from the beginning of the show. This then results in вЂњIllusionary World UshioвЂќ being able to grant Tomoya a wish. Ushio made the Illusionary World to grant her dad, a wish. From the creation of the robot, to the destruction of the world. Everything that happens here is because of UshioвЂ™s real life experiences. To simplify this even more, the Illusionary World was created by Ushio. Since Tomoya exists in the form of a robot in the Illusionary World, all of the orbs gained by the human Tomoya, are transported here for UshioвЂ™s end goal and plan. This is why the manifestation of Tomoya in the Illusionary World, is a robot. Tomoya bought her a toy robot, and it was very precious to her. Ushio builds a robot because of a memory she shares with Tomoya. In short, Nagisa and Tomoya can feel their daughterвЂ™s spirit from a distant world and Nagisa decides to write a play about it. She loses her memory and begins life alone, in a world modeled after the one she knew as a child. After Ushio dies, her вЂњspiritвЂќ is transported to another existential plane. In fact, itвЂ™s not even a part of the world that Clannad takes place in. This is because the Illusionary World isnвЂ™t bound by time.
